Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Root Canal treatment is a procedure used to save teeth which otherwise would have to be extracted. It is required when the nerve and blood supply (Pulp) becomes irreversibly injured due to infection or trauma. This infection can cause an abscess. The only way to permanently treat an abscess is to remove the pulp of the tooth or to extract the tooth.

Nowadays Root Canal Therapy is a painless procedure carried out with automated rotary endodontic equipment. Some complex cases need to be referred to a specialist Endodontist, who can complete the procedure using a microscope and can provide the patient with sedation should they wish.

Following Root Canal Treatment it is usually necessary to place a crown on the tooth. This is because the tooth may be brittle and fragile and a crown is needed to strengthen and restore the tooth.
